Most American school have boys and girls in the same classroom. But a public high school in the small, rural town of Boonsboro, Maryland, offers a special program. Top students in the ninth and tenth grades can attend single-sex classes for math, science, English and social studies.
The aim is to help teenagers keep their minds on their work by keeping males and females apart. Rebecca Brown chooses the students for what Boonsboro High School calls the Academy.
Placement in the Academy is voluntary.
Students are invited after middle school. They need high marks and test scores and strong teacher recommendations. They also need to be involved in activities.
Michael Bair has been at Boonsboro High for twenty years and directs the Academy. His ninth-grade English class for boys centres on books that he believes boys find interesting. He says, “The novels they're reading now are very manly novels. They're novels that deal with the arrogance(傲慢) of man and the pride of man.”
Morgan Van Fleet is a senior at Boonsboro High. She likes being in the Academy. She says boys and girls act differently when they are together in the classroom. She says, “To me, it almost seems like preventing your chances of developing yourself because you’re more focused on ‘Oh, I wish they'd shut up. Oh, what do they think of me?’, instead of focusing on ‘What's the homework? What's going on in this class? Or what's the lesson?''' There is one activity that girls and boys in the Academy do together. At the end of the day, many of them stay and help tutor(辅导) students who are having trouble in school.

How Writing Things Down Can Change Your Life
What do you write down? For most of us, writing consists of emails, task lists, and perhaps the odd work project. However, making time to write down certain things, such as our daily experiences, our goals, and our feelings can change the way we live our lives.
Here are five different ways that writing things down can change your life, and what you can do to get the most out of each.
61. _____________________
David Allen, productivity speaker and author of Getting Things Done, recommends doing what he calls a “core dump”. This involves writing down every task, activity, and project you need to address. This could range from picking up milk on the way home, to a multi-person project at work. Writing down every “to-do” item you can think of clears space in your head for more important topics.
You can also use a technique called “morning pages”, which was pioneered by Julia Cameron, author of The Artist’s Way. Morning pages involves completing three pages (around 750 words) of stream-of-consciousness writing. Through doing this first thing each morning, you clear your head in preparation for the day’s most important thinking.
62. __________________________
Writing down what’s on your mind is a great way to work through inner conflict or process your feelings around a particular situation. It’s similar to talking a situation through with a friend, and it’s a useful way of strengthening your self-soothing (自我安慰)abilities.
63. _________________________________
If you keep a journal and regularly write down your thoughts and feelings, you’ll soon have a record of your experiences that you might otherwise have forgotten. Keeping a journal can also enhance your levels of self-trust. When you can look back and see how successfully you’ve traversed and dealt with important decisions and tricky situations in the past, you’ll feel more confident in your ability to do so in the future.
64. _____________________________________
If you write down everything you need to do in a particular day or week, you gain an additional sense of satisfaction, when having completed the task, you can cross the item off our list. Feeling productive enhances your productivity and fosters a sense of achievement and progress.
65. _____________________________________
No matter what’s going on in your outside world, when you write things down, you enter a world of possibility, which helps you stay motivated and gives you space to think big and aim high. When you write things down, you have a chance to explore dreams and ambitions that you might not feel safe revealing to anyone else yet. You also have a space to keep track of all your ideas and desires so you can return to them later.

18.      Russ Gremel, now 98 years old, decided it was time to donate $2 million to the Illinois Audubon Society, a charity to purchase nearly 400 acres of land for wildlife protection. Gremel was able to make this amazing donation because he purchased $1,000 worth of Walgreens stock seven decades ago whose value has grown recently.
“A single man with no kids, Gremel has lived in the same Chicago house for 95 years, and has always lived simply”, neighbor Patrick Falso told TODAY. Falso said he heard Gremel say many times the “money wasn’t mine to begin with” and that he always intended to give it away.
The Gremel Wildlife shelter was founded on June 4. Illinois Audubon Society president Jim Herkert said Gremel’s donation
was extremely generous. “It’s allowing us to protect a really valuable and important possession and realize one of Gremel’s wishes that we could find a place where people could come out and experience nature the way he did as a kid,” Herkert told TODAY.
After doing all this, this past weekend, Gremel adopted an old Chihuahua(吉娃娃犬). Winnie the dog was picked up as a homeless dog several months ago. She suffered from a kind of cancer, which was treated—and all she needed was a loving home, which Colleen Collins, the founder of Perfect Pooches Adoption Agency, was determined to find.
Gremel had lost his own beloved Chihuahua earlier this year. When he reached out to Collins about Winnie, she felt this could be a good match. That feeling grew when she brought Winnie to his house for a meet and greet, and Winnie was introduced not only to Gremel but also some of his friends and neighbors. One had brought over a lot of fresh strawberries; all said they’d be there to help out in any way needed.
1. Patrick Falso is mentioned in the text mainly to explain _________.
A. how Gremel earned the money B. what kind of person Gremel is
C. why Gremel made the donation D. where Gremel has been living
2. What can we learn about Russ Gremel from the text?
A. He raised many pet dogs in his life.
B. He bought Walgreens stock at age 28.
C. He adopted a young Chihuahua recently.
D. He volunteered in wildlife shelters regularly.
3. What can we infer about Gremel’s neighbors from the text?
A. They live in harmony with animals. B. They are impressed with dog Winnie.
C. They lead a healthy and wealthy life. D. They are caring and kind to each other.
