"Keep Your Breath to Cool Your Porridge"
A New Analysis of the Characteristics of Elizabeth
Abstract
Beginning with the study of a specific idiom: to keep your breath to cool your porridge, this thesis concentrates on the discussion of Elizabeth's characteristics through comparison and contrast of several groups of conversations. It is the idiom that arouses the author's great interests to explore the characteristics of Elizabeth, the heroine of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, which has been popular for centuries. Although Jane Austen only offers five direct descriptions on Elizabeth's characteristics, we can easily collect an abundance of indirect portrayal from her conversations with other characters of the story, which naturally form a context for us to define Elizabeth's characteristics.
