明水县交通以公路为主，哈黑公路与明沈公路在县内交汇，通肯河在县东境流过。℃,，无霜期124天，经济以农业为主，是一个半农业、半牧业的县份。
明水县国内生产总值（GDP）2002年为148517万元（第一产业58172万元，第二产业54047万元，第三产业36298万元），2003年为131710万元（第一产业44186万元，第二产业49871万元，第三产业37653万元），呈现下滑态势。但第三产业呈现上升势头。县内矿产资源匮乏，除西部有石油、天然气和东部有膨润土蕴藏外，有砖瓦用粘土圾临时性开采建筑用砂石在开发利用。2004年产红砖3800万块，矿业产值608万元，%。因此，矿业在县县域经济中的贡献很小。

（二）开发利用与保护现状
明水县已发现开发利用的矿产有砖瓦用粘土，以及临时性开采的建筑用砂石（待恢复矿山）和东部未利用的膨润土矿。持采矿许可证的砖瓦用粘土矿山有县第三砖厂、前军第一砖厂、团结乡砖厂、美丽村砖厂、永兴镇务本砖厂、永久乡砖厂、兴仁镇合企砖厂区七家矿山企业在开发砖瓦用粘土。这些矿山企业都属于小型矿山企业，多分布于交通便利的明水镇、兴仁镇及永兴镇等地。全县探明（简测）的砖瓦用粘土资源量（333）2004年共计3800万块，年销售收入608万元（表1）。%。，预计年产量50吨，80产值万元。
全县的矿山企业基本都是老矿山，过采及现采面积都很大，（表6）。目前，过采区和现采区的过采部分基本都在闲置，没有复垦、植被、平坡以及综合利用等。因此，各矿山急需边采矿边恢复治理。把“在保护中开发、在开发中保护”的精神切实落到实处。
