Abstract Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) has been widely used as transparent, recyclable, and environmental-friendly high-
barrier flexible food packaging materials due to its good transparency, film-forming ability, and excellent oxygen and organic
solvent barrier properties. However, Further application of PVA coating was restricted by its low humidity sensitivity and
high water vapor permeability, which could be improved by PVA cross-linking via esterification, etherification and
acetalization, or PVA composition with nano layered materials such as montmorillonite and graphene oxide composite. The
barrier properties and its influencing factors, PVA modification via chemical cross-linking and nano-composition were
summarized and reviews. Finally, the existing challenges and future directions of PVA modification were discussed.
