MODERN LOGISTICS SYSTEMS:THEORY AND PRACTICE
Williamson, h C., Spitzer, Daniel M.
Having materials at the right place at the right time has always been recognized as an important part of business, but this cannot be said about the specific activities that make such placement possible. The importance of these activities is not widely recognized because:
1. Many of them art relatively 1ow-profile, unglamorous activities that management has not associated with having any discernible impact on placement, and
2. Responsibility for their performance has been dispersed throughout the enterprise.
It was not until systems theory was applied to the process of distribution that achieving such placement was regarded as other than a bother. With the application of systems thinking came development of the total cost concept, the idea of minimizing the sum of the costs of performing those activities responsible for having materials at the right place at the right time. This requires identification of the activities. There mon denominators, but the number of activities associated with the process has grown because thinking about its nature and scope has changed fundamentally during the past three decades of serious development of the field.
