AN EMPIRICAL STUDY ON STUDENTS ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS IN JOINTLY2SPONSORED BILINGUAL PROGRAMS

Abstract
This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of jointly2sponsored bilingual immersion programs from the perspective of academic gains. The study was conducted by using a quasi2experimental design. Mathematics performance pared between 137 students in the joint institute ( treatment group ) and another 137students in the regular programs (cont rol group). ANOVA and independent samples t2test were conducted in
the data analysis procedures. The statistical interpretation of the procedures done by the researchers to answer the research question had clearly evidenced that, students in the treatment group did as well as those in the control group on mathematics test (p =. 073).

1. Introduction
In an age where petitiveness not only in China but also in the world job market, is stringent, being bilingual is seen as enhancing opportunities for better employment. In order to meet the challenge of economic globalization and technological revolution, bilingual instruction has been advocated in Chinese universities since2001, aiming at t raining English2Chinese bilingual students. Nowadays more and more universities and colleges have been practicing a special kind of bilingual instruction: programs jointly sponsored by Chinese and English2speaking western universities. However, there has been little panying research and next to none direct such models. The present study mainly attempts to investigate the effectiveness of joint bilingual immersion programs from the perspective of academic gains.
2. Theoretical Background
2. 1 Bilingual Instruction in Chinese Universities
Bilingual instruction refers to “teaching subject courses such as mat h, physics, chemistry, history, geography and so on using a foreign
