The Asia Research Institute (ARI) is a university-level research institute of the
National University of Singapore (NUS). Its mission is to provide a world-class
focus and resource for research on Asia. The three themes of the ARI-Springer Asia
Series – Cities, Religion, and Migration – correspond to three of ARI’s research
clusters and primary research emphases. ARI’s logo depicts rice grains in star-like
formation. Rice has been the main staple food for many of Asia’s peoples since the
15th century. It forms the basis munal bonds, an element of ritual in many
Asian societies, and mon cultural thread across nations and societies.
