Migration to Britain 
Recently, e to find safety, jobs and a better life. 
16th‐18th centuries, Huguenots (French Protestants) come to escape religious persecution in 
France. 
Mid‐1840s, Irish people escaped terrible famine in Ireland. Became labours and help to build 
canals and railways. 
1880‐1910, Jewish people escaped racist attacks (called ‘Pogroms’ in what was Russian Empire) 
from Poland, Ukraine and Belarus. 
After WWII (1935‐45), huge task of rebuilding Britain. 
Government encourage workers from Ireland and other parts of Europe to help reconstruction. 
1948, West e and work. 
1950s, Centres were set up in West Indies to recruit buses drivers. Textile and engineering firms 
from north of England and Midlands recruited workers from India and Pakistan.  
For about 25 years, West Indies, India, Pakistan, and later Bangladesh, travelled to work and 
settle in UK. 
Number of people migrating from these areas fell in late 1960s and early 70s due to 
Government new immigration restriction.  
‘old’ Commonwealth countries such as Australia, New Zealand and Canada did not face such 
restriction. 
During this time, UK helped a large number of refugees. 
1972, thousands of people of Indian origin were forced to leave Uganda. 
Late 1970s, refugees from Vietnam. 
Since 1979, more than 25000 refugees from South East Asia. 
1980s, largest immigrant groups from US, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand. 
Early 1990s, people from Soviet Union.
