INTRODUCTION
To ensure the uninterrupted flow of crude oil, you must keep
your oil production sites constantly supplied with everything
they need, whether they are offshore-exploration platforms,
production platforms, or remote onshore-drilling rigs.
Managing this supply chain can be a logistical nightmare,
particularly if pany, like most, has multiple operations
or is engaged in several joint ventures at once. You must track
and account for containers carrying supplies such as drilling-
mud additives, well casings, and pipe; analytical equipment; and
even drinking water. You must allocate the costs of warehouse
space and deck space on supply ships. And you must meet your
schedules.
Operating an offshore platform is expensive. Drilling rigs can
cost hundreds of thousands of dollars a day to run. If you’re
forced to shut down all or part of a production operation due to
shortfalls in supplies, you face not only shutdown costs but the
high costs of lost production.
