The Development and Potentials of Root-plant Derived Ethanol in China

Abstract: Under the pressure of soaring prices in food and fossil fuels, China's policy on seeking substitutes for
bio-ethanol mainly derived from grain crops, now, has to shift to none grain crops. Root plants, especially cassava,
being more cost-beneficial, have greater potentials in bio ethanol production. At present, the development of bio
ethanol from root plants is still in the initial stage, mainly confined to the technologies in production and waste
treatment, good quality breeds, etc. In addition, due to the low capacity of bio-ethanol market and difficulty of
market access for bio-ethanol production, the scale of its production will remain small in a short period of time.
