Introduction
The British Association of Leather Technologists and Chemists (BLC) held its annual conference on 20th to 22nd June, 2019 at the University of Northampton, UK. The conference was attended by leather technologists, chemists, scientists, academics, manufacturers and suppliers from around the world to exchange knowledge, discuss the latest developments, and showcase new innovations in the leather industry. This paper aims to provide a brief overview of the conference proceedings, highlighting some of the key presentations and discussions.
Conference Proceedings

The third session focused on innovation and technology, with presentations on the latest research and development in the leather industry. Dr. Lisa Perry, Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Fine Print Research, University of the West of England, presented her work on the use of digital printing and laser cutting in leather design. She demonstrated how these technologies can be used to create intricate and detailed patterns on leather, offering new creative possibilities for designers and manufacturers.
The final session addressed environmental challenges and opportunities in the leather industry. Dr. Sebastian Schwarz, Global Director of Sustainability at Clarks, discussed the various environmental impacts of leather production, including air and water pollution, waste generation, and carbon emissions. He highlighted some of the initiatives and strategies implemented by Clarks to reduce their environmental footprint, including the use of renewable energy, waste reduction, and closed-loop systems.
