Earthquakes are usually caused when rock underground suddenly breaks along a fault. This sudden release of energy causes the seismic waves that make the ground shake.

Earthquake? When did it happen?
The Tangshan Earthquake was a
natural disaster that occurred on
July 28, 1976. It is believed to be
the largest earthquake of the 20th
century by death toll.
The number of deaths was around
240,000 to 255,000. A further
164,000 people were recorded as
being severely injured.
