Being fat is a nonstop fight between not being noticed and attracting much notice. Sometimes you want to be accepted; instead, you're singled out and judged. In 2015, when I became the first plussize designer (大码服装设计师) to win Project Runway, I hoped it would be a moment not only for inclusive fashion (时 尚), but also for all other fat human beings out there. It wasn't just me who had won; we'd won. Many women told me they were afraid to wear bright colors or show off their arms until they saw me doing it. But some of the words on the Internet were terrible:“Why did they pick that fat designer?”“How can she encourage such an unhealthy lifestyle?” I got sad and put on more weight. I reached a point where I couldn't climb stairs without losing my breath (呼吸).
I finally realized that if I didn't take care of myself, I couldn't keep doing what I loved, so I went to see a doctor and started doing exercise every day. After that I got more judgment, this time from people in the fat group who once supported me. They turned their backs on me and said,“You can't be body positive (自 信 的) and still lose weight.”I thought, “Well, why not? I wasn't trying to be ‘prettier’; I wanted to have control of my life.”
Size should not divide us, whether we're fat, thin, or anywhere in between. I'm designing clothes for plus woman, but one day I might be open to designing straight sizes. People judge me for that, too. But I just want to create clothes that make people feel good. I want every woman to love herself and go after her dreams like I did.
24. What was the author's hope after she won Project Runway?
A. People would look up to her.
B. Other fat people would share her pride.
C. The clothes she designed would sell well.
D. Fat people would lead the fashion industry.
25. After the author saw the words on the Internet, she _____.
A. lost interest in fashion
B. lost control of her body
C. stopped wearing bright colors
D. decided to have a healthy lifestyle at once
26. What was fat people's attitude to the author when she started losing weight?
A. Dissatisfied. B. Uninterested.
C. They laughed at her. D. They couldn't believe it.
27. What's the author's real purpose while working in the fashion field?
A. To be happy with herself.
B. To create more plussize clothes.
C. To make women appreciate themselves more.
change into designing straightsized clothes.

Pomegranates (石榴) stand for life and energy in many cultures. They are mentioned in ancient stories of many countries in Europe and Asia. But for many Americans, the fruit is far from regular consumption (消 费). If you can find them, there's usually just one type — Wonderful. It es in a darkred ball with hardtoget bright seeds (种子).
“Most Americans have less than one pomegranate a year,”says John Chater, a researcher at the University of California, Riverside. Chater wants to change the way Americans think about the pomegranate. He wants to introduce pomegranates that have different tastes and colors so that a larger number of people will enjoy the fruit, which cannot be found in the top 20 most popular fruits in his country.
Chater fell in love with pomegranates early in life. As a child, Chater used to visit his grandfather on his farm. Chater's grandfather, S. John Chater, grew a few types of pomegranates just for fun. The seeds were brought over from Lebanon. “I often went over there and he would make me experience delicious pomegranates of different types,”Chater said.“I thought everybody had a grandfather like this.”
It turns out, everybody did not have a grandfather like this. In fact, years later, while he was a college student, Chater found out that his grandfather was a bit of a somebody in the world of fruit breeding (培育). One important scientist he met had his grandfather's photo on the wall of his office. And the US government has stored several new types of fruit developed by his grandfather.
Along with his team, Chater is growing 13 types of pomegranates, including Parfianka, Golden Globes, and of course, the mon Wonderful. He is studying how consumers look at the fruit's tastes and colors. He has also done taste studies suggesting that many consumers prefer sweeter types with softer seeds than the Wonderful type. While he has nothing against Wonderful — whose biggest problem is that it is a lateseason fruit, meaning it remains on the trees longer than other types — he thinks consumers and growers should have more choices.
28. What is Chater's expectation according to Paragraph 2?
A. To encourage Americans to eat more fruit.
B. To show the public how to eat pomegranates.
C. To teach American farmers to grow Wonderful.
D. To make pomegranates more popular in the US.
29. What did Chater do when visiting his grandfather?
A. He grew pomegranates.
B. He tasted pomegranates.
C. He helped him study pomegranates.
D. He brought him pomegranate seeds.
30. What can we say about Chater's grandfather?
A. He was a specialist in fruit breeding.
B. He liked to make friends with scientists.
C. He was too strict with his grandchildren.
D. He tried to save old types of pomegranates.
31. What is a disadvantage of Wonderful?
A. It remains unknown to many Americans.
B. It is difficult for farmers to grow the type.
C. It is too sweet for most American consumers.
D. It is ready later than other types of pomegranates.

A mini ice age that lasted for 125 years began in the middle of the 6th century, helping to get the world into a period of time that was messy. One of the key events behind it was the big eruption (喷发) of a volcano (火山) somewhere in the southern part of the earth. Now we may know when and where it happened.
Big eruptions throw so much debris (碎片) into the air that sunlight is blocked in some areas. This can cool the earth and encourage more ice to form at the two ends of the earth, reflecting (反 射) more sunlight, and further cooling the earth. It has long been thought that the eruptions of volcanoes between AD 536 and 547 first started what is known as the Late Antique Little Ice Age.
Robert Dull at California Lutheran University and his workmates have now shown that the second of two big eruptions during this time appears to have happened at the Ilopango volcano in El Salvador, a country in Central America. The team found the remains of three trees that“witnessed”this event. Two of these were killed by the volcanic activity.
Studies on different tree rings inside the trees showed their age. The trees died between AD 503 and 545. Research on debris in nearby soil (土 壤) also helped to show that a big eruption happened around this time, most likely in late AD 539 or 540. An earlier big eruption is thought to have happened in AD 536, but researchers haven't yet managed to make sure which volcano was connected.
“I think the Late Antique Little Ice Age was started by these eruptions here and made longer by others,”says Michael Sigl at the University of Bern in Switzerland. The final proof that would connect Ilopango to the AD 540 eruption would be to find debris from it in ice from the southern end of the earth from that time, he says.
32. What happened when lots of debris was in the air?
A. The earth started losing ice.
B. The temperature on the earth dropped.
C. The two ends of the earth had more volcanoes.
D. The sunlight rea
