Australia Day is Australia's national day celebrated on 26 January annually in all states and territories. 26 January was chosen because it is the day of the establishment of the first English settlement at Port Jackson by Captain Arthur Phillip in 1788.
Since 1960, the winner of the Australian of the Year award is announced by the Prime Minister on the eve of Australia Day (25 Jan)
It began to be actually celebrated on 26 January from 1994.

Moomba Festival is Australia's largest community festival with a uniquely Melbourne program of activities and events running from 11 to 14 March .

The Melbourne Cup is Australia's most prestigious annual Thoroughbred horse race. It is a 3,200 metre race for three-year-olds and over. It is the richest "two-mile" handicap in the world, and one of the richest turf races.
Conducted by the Victoria Racing Club on the Flemington Racecourse as part of the spring carnival in Melbourne, Victoria, the event starts at 3pm on the first Tuesday in November and is known locally as "the race that stops a nation".
