根据有关规定，政府采购部门在收购“山姆大叔”的牛肉时，都要在包装箱盖上“US”（美国国名的缩写为“US”或“USA”）的符号，以此作为美国财产的标识。十分凑巧的是，“山姆大叔”（Uncle Sam）的英文缩写也是“US”。人们看到那些通过“山姆大叔”之手的牛肉成为了美国的财产，很自然地把这两个“US”名称联络在一起。这样一传十，十传百，成果“山姆大叔”渐渐地成了美国的“绰号”。1961年，美国的国会正式通过决策，确认“山姆大叔”是美国的象征。

What is an American Dream?
American dream is the belief that America is a country where one can seek for opportunities and success, as well as better life. In the early days of colonization, people, especially Europeans, began streaming into this land of promise bearing the dreams to avoid political and religious persecution, shake off the poverty in their homeland, to pursue more prosperous life. Nowadays, many people from other parts of the world still hold the belief that America is a place to realize their dreams to achieve their personal values.

The term was first used by James Truslow Adams in his book The Epic of America which was written in 1931. He states: “The American Dream is that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement”.
