Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choi
By adopting a few simple techniques, parents who read to their children can greatly increase their children’’s language development. It is surprising but true. How parents talk to their children makes a big difference in the children’’s language development. If a parent encourages the child to actively respond to what the parent is reading, the child’’s language skills increase.
A study was done with 30 three-year-old children and their parents. Half of the children participated in the experimental study; the other half acted as the control group. In the experimental group, the parents were given a two-hour training session in which they were taught to ask open-ended questions rather than yes-or-no questions. For example, the parent should ask, "What is the doggie doing?" rather than "Is the doggie running away?" The parents in the experimental group were also instructed in how to help children find answers, how to suggest alternative possibilities and how to praise correct answers.
At the beginning of the study, the children did not differ in measures of language development, but at the end of one month, the children in the experimental group showed months ahead of the control group on a test of verbal expression and vocabulary. Nine months later, the children in the experimental group still showed an advance of 6 months over the children in the control group.
1. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?
A Children who talk a lot are more intelligent.
B Parents who listen to their children can teach them more.
C Active children should read more and be given more attention.
D Verbal ability can easily be developed with proper methods.
By adopting a few simple techniques, parents who read to their children can greatly increase their children
’s language development.(父母给孩子读书的时候,通过采用一些简朴的方法可以提高孩子的语言能力。)
2. What does "it" in line 2 can most probably be replaced by?
A Parents increasing children’s language development_________.
B Reading techniques being simple
C Parents reading to children
D Children’s intelligence development
答案:A
3. According to the author, which of the following questions is the best type to ask children about?
A Do you see the elephant?
B Is the elephant in the cage?
C What animals do you like?
D Shall we go to the zoo?
答案在第二段:“In the experimental group, the parents were given A two-hour training session in which they were taught to ask open-ended quest-tins rather than yes-or-no questions.(在进行实验的这一组里,给家长进行两小时的培训,让他们学会向孩子们提一些自由回答不能用是或不是回答的问题。)”
4. The difference between the control group and the experimental group was_________.
A the training that parents received
B the age of the children
C tile books that were read
D the number of the children
答案:A
5. The best conclusion we can draw from the passage is that_________.
A parents should be trained to read to their children
B the more children read, the more intelligent they will become
C children’s language skills increase when they are required to respond actively
D children who read actively seem six months older
“If a parent encourages the child to actively respond to what the parent is reading, the child’s language skills increase.(假如家长鼓励孩子们对于家长给他们读的书的内容做出积极的反映,那么孩子们的语言能力就会提高。)”
To us it seems so natural to put up an umbrella to keep the water off when it rains. But actually the umbrella was not invented as protection against rain. It was first used as a shade against the sun.
Nobody knows who first invented it, but the umbrella was used in very ancient times. Probably the first to use it were the Chinese, way back in the eleventh century .
We know that the umbrella was also used in ancient Egypt and Babylon as a sunshade. And there was a strange thing connected with its use; it became a symbol of honor and authority. In the Far East In ancient times, the umbrella was allowed-to be used only by royal people or by those in high office.
In Europe, the Greeks were the first to use the umbrella as a sunshade. And the umbrella was in common use in ancient Greece. But it is believed that the first persons in Europe to use the umbrellas as protection against the rain were the ancient Romans.
During the Middle Ages, the use of the umbrella practically disappeared. Then it appeared again in Italy in 16th century. And again it became a symbol of power and authority.
Umbrellas have not changed much in style during all this time, though they have become much lighter in weight. It wasn’’t until the twentieth century that women’’s umbrellas began to be made in a variety of colors.
6. The first use of umbrella was as_________.
A protection against rain
B a shade against the sun
C a symbol of power
D a symbol of honor
“But actually the umbrella was not invented as protection against rain.It was first used as a shade against the sun.”
7. _________were regarded as the people who first used umbrellas.
A Romans
B Greeks
C Chinese
D Europeans
“Probably the first to use it were the Chinese,”根据第二段可直接得知。
8. The umbrella was used only by royal people or those in high office_________.
A in European in the eighteenth century
B in ancient Egypt and Babylon
C in the Far East in ancient times
D during the Middle Ages
“In the Far East In ancient times, the umbrella was allowed to be used only by royal people or by those in high office.”
9. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?
A Women enjoy using umbrella with varies kinds of colors
B The inventor of the umbrella is unknown
C Once ordinary people had no right to use umbrellas
D Umbrellas were popular and cheap in the ancient times
“And there was a strange thing connected with its use;it became a symbol of honor and authority. In the Far East In ancient times, the umbrella was allowed to be used only by royal people or by those in high office.”
10. Which of the following may be the best title for the passage?
A When Was the Umbrella Invented
B The Role of Umbrella in History
C The Colors and Shapes of Umbrella
D Who Needed Umbrella First
The advantages and disadvantages of a large population have long been a subject of discussion among economists It has been argued that the supply of good land is limited. To feed a large population, inferior land must be cultivated and the good land worded intensively. Thus , each person produces less and this means a lower average income than could be obtained with a smaller population. Other economists have argued that a large population gives more scope for specialization and the development of facilities such as ports, roads and railways, which are not likely to be built unless there is a big demand to justify them.
One of the difficulties in carrying out a world—wide birth control program lies in the fact that official attitudes to population growth vary from country to country depending on the level of industrial development and the availability of food and raw materials. In the developing country where a vastly expanded population is pressing hard upon the limits of food, space and natural resources, it will be the first concern of government to place a limit on the birthrate, whatever the consequences may be. In the highly industrialized society the problem may be more complex. A decreasing birth rate may lead to unemployment because it results in a declining market for manufactured goods. When the pressure of population on housing declines, prices also decline and the building industry is weakened. Faced with considerations such as these, the government of a developed country may well prefer to see a slowly increasing population, rather than one which is stable or in decline.
11. A smaller population may mean_________.
A higher productivity, but a lower average income
B lower productivity, but a higher average income
C lower productivity, and a lower average income
D higher productivity, and a higher average income
见第一段,人口多时“each person produces less and this means a lower average income…”
12. According to the passage, a large population will provide a chance for developing_________.
A agriculture
B transport system
C industry
D national economy
见第一段最后一句,“Other economists have argued that a large population gives more scope for specialization and the development of facilities such as ports, roads and railways, which are not likely to be built unless there is a big demand to justify them。”
13. In a developed country, people will perhaps go out of work if the birthrate_________.
A goes up
B is decreasing
C remains stable
D is out of control
第二段指出,“A decreasing birth rate may lead to unemployment because it results in a declining market for manufactured goods.”
14. According to the passage slowly rising birthrate perhaps is good for_________.
A a developed nation
B a developing nation
C every nation with a big population
D every nation with a small population
答案:A
第二段最后一句,“the government of a developed country may well prefer to see a slowly increasing population, rather than one which is stable or in decline发达国家政府更希望看到人口缓慢增长而不是……”
15. It is no easy job to carry out a general plan for birth control throughout the world because_________.
A there are too many underdeveloped countries in the world
B underdeveloped countries have low level of industrial development
C different governments have different views about the problem
D even developed countries may have complex problems
“One of the difficulties in carrying out a world-wide birth control program lies in the fact that official attitudes to population growth vary from country to country depending on the level of industrial development and the availability of food and raw materials.在世界范围实行总体的计划生育不是一个简朴的工作”,因素在开头提到“态度……各国不同。”
