第一节: 阅读下列短文, 从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D) 中, 选出最佳选项.
A
Every year thousands of tourists visit Pompeii, Italy. They see the sights that Pompeii is famous for its stadium and theatres, its shops and restaurants. The tourists do not, however, see Pompeii's people. They do not see them because Pompeii has no people. No one has lived in Pompeii for almost years.
Once, Pompeii was a busy city of 22,000 people. Italy was at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, a grasscovered volcano. Mount Vesuvius had not erupted for centuries, so the people of Pompeii felt safe. But they were not.
In August of AD 79, Mount Vesuvius erupted. The entire top of the mountain exploded, and a huge black cloud rose into the air. Soon stones and hot ash began to fall on Pompeii. When the eruption ended two days later, Pompeii was buried under eet of stones and ashes. Almost all of its people were dead.
For centuries, Pompeii lay buried under stone and ash. Then, in the year 1861, an Italian scientist named Ginseppe began to uncover Pompeii. Slowly, carefully, Ginseppe and his men dug. The city looked almost the same as it had looked in AD 79. There were streets and fountains houses and shops. There was a stadium with 00 seats. Perhaps the most important of all, there were everyday objects, which tell us a great deal about the people who lived in Pompeii. Many glasses and jars had some dark blue color in the bottom, so we know that the people of Pompeii liked wine. They liked bread, too; metal bread pans were even in bakery. In one bakery there were 81 round, flat loaves of bread-a type of bread that is still sold in Italy today. Tiny boxes filled with a dark, shiny powder tell us that women liked to wear eye-makeup(眼部化妆品).
Ginseppe has died, but his work continues. One-fourth has not been uncovered yet. Scientists are still digging, still making discoveries that draw the tourists to Pompeii.
41. Why do large numbers of people come to Pompeii each year?

42. Why had so many Pompeiians remained by volcanic Mount Vesuvius?
A. The city nearby offered all kinds of fun.
B. The area produced the finest wine in Italy.
C. Few people expected the volcano to erupt again.
D. The mountain was beautiful and covered with grass.
43. Why did the city uncovered look almost the same as it had looked in AD 79?
A. Because Ginseppe and his men dug it slowly and carefully.
B. Because the city was buried alive and remained untouched.
C. Because scientists successfully rebuilt the city with everyday objects.
D. Because nobody had lived in the city ever since the volcano erupted.
44. What do we know about the Pompeiians who lived years ago?
A. They lived more or less the same as Italians now do.
B. They liked women wearing all kinds of makeup.
C. They enjoyed a lazy life with drinking and eating.

Television has opened windows in everybody's life. Young men will never again go to war as they did in 1914. Millions of people now have seen the effects of a battle. And the result has been a general dislike of war and perhaps more interest in helping those who suffer from all the terrible things that have been shown on the screen.
Television has also changed politics. The most remote(偏僻的)can now follow state affairs, see and hear the politicians before an election. Better informed, he is more likely to vote, and so to make his opinion count.
Unfortunately, television's influence has been extremely harmful to the young. Children do not have enough experience to realize that TV shows present an unreal world, that TV advertisement lie to sell products that are sometimes bad or useless. They believe and want to practice what they see. They do believe that the violence they see is normal and acceptable.
All educators agree that the "television generation" are more violent than their parents and grandparents. Also, the young are less patient. Used to TV shows, where everything is quick and interesting, they do not have the patience to read an article without pictures, to read a book that requires thinking, to listen to a teacher who doesn't do funny things like the people on children's programs. And they expect all problems to be solved happily in ten, fifteen, or thirty minutes. That’s the time it takes on the screen.
45. In the past, many young people .
A. knew the effect of war B. went in for politics
C. were willing to be soldiers D. liked to save the wounded in wars
46. The author thinks that TV advertisements .
A. are not reliable on the whole
B. are useless to people
C. are a good guide to adults
D. are very harmful to the young
47. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. People have become used to crimes now.
B. With a TV set some problems can be solved quickly.
C. People now like to read books with pictures.
D. The adults are less violent than the young.
48. From the passage, we can conclude that .
A. Children should keep away from TV B. TV programs should be improved
C. Children’s books should have pictures D. TV has a deep effect on the young

One type of the fish is named salmon. There are many different kinds of salmon, but almost all of them mate in a very strange way. They are born in small, fresh water rivers. They live in the river for a year, and then swim downstream to a bigger river and eventually to the ocean. In the saltwater, they eat constantly and grow very quickly. While they live in the ocean, salmon are silver colored.
