Abstract
William Faulkner is an outstanding American writer. He is good at using modernism in his writing .He and James Joyce, Virginia Woolf are regarded as “Three important writers of writing stream-of-consciousness novels”. He creates a mystical country, the "yoknapatapha country", which based on his homeland. It has 2400 kilometers and 15000 populations; the center of this country is Jefferson. His stories mainly happen in it. The Sound and the Fury is the best one among those stories used of stream-of-consciousness. This novel can be divided into four parts, which not only describes the collapse of a southern aristocratic family and the decaying of the southern civilization, but also finds a way for those people who have been lost in the modern world. It has great significance to our daily life. This thesis is going to study the writer William Faulkner’s life briefly. Then, it will analyze the theme of this novel
