How to express sympathy
It’s hard enough finding the right words to use in response to bad news in one’s own language, but it’s even harder in a foreign language. Sometimes, you will have to react to bad news on the spot. What do you say? We look at some of the typical phrases for everyday occurrences and for more serious situations.

We start with two minor upsets:
1. You colleague tells you she had to cancel her plans to go to the theatre this evening.
That's too bad.
2. Your colleague explains how she lost her report when puter crashed. She's been working on it for three hours.
Oh, you poor thing. I know just how you feel.
Now, we look at more serious upsets:
3. A colleague didn't receive the expected promotion.
I'm so sorry to hear that. You must feel terrible.
4. A colleague tells you that he has made a really serious mistake in the report he's just sent out.
Oh, how awful, but it could have happened to any one of us.
Finally, we look at the most serious situations:
Although it is best to put condolences in writing, sometimes it's just not possible, often because you only hear about the situation when you meet the person. As with a letter of condolence, it's often best to keep to the expressions that everyone uses; they are usually forting than ignoring the situation.
5. A colleague's husband has died.
I am so sorry about your husband, Sharon. I don't know what to say.
6. A colleague has learned that she has a serious illness.
Paul, I am so sorry. What a terrible piece of news.
7. A colleague has just been fired.
I am so terribly sorry to hear what happened. What a dreadful shock.
