Motherhood
The patriarchal society that made up Chile during these times forced motherhood
to be a requirement for women. I loved how Isabel chose to be this and yet gain
her independence with the feminist magazine and writing. I found it truly amazing
how she was able to work and still fulfill her housewife duties with extra energy to
be crafty and write other things. This is the ideal woman we’re talking about here.
What scared me a little was the scene in which Isabel’s grandmother almost left
her in the hospital as they fled. Its interesting how Isabel mentions nonchalantly
that she may not be her mother’s daughter because of how they chose a baby
randomly and walked away. Still, the bonds between mother and daughter are
exemplary, and once again they show the signs of intimacy and trust that aren’t
present in many families today.
Sexuality
It seems that the women in Isabel’s family have all loved “passionately” and
completely. As something passed on, it was no doubt that Paula would love in
the same way. Isabel was not afraid to speak of her sensuality and her most
intimate feelings. This is something that touched me because nowadays not
many people are so expressive and is the reason why marriages end in divorce
