Unit 4 Lesson 30 The Family in Our House
Class Opening and Review
GREETING
Greet the class with any of the phrases the students have learned.
SING “HAPPY BIRTHDAY”
If any one of the students in the class is having a birthday soon, use that student’s name. Otherwise, sing the song to Jenny.
DRILL
Use pictures, drawings, role-play or objects to lead the class in a question-and-answer drill about birthday party, birthday presents, birthday cake and birthday candles. For example:
Teacher: Today is my birthday! (Pretend to unwrap a present.) What’s this?
Class: A birthday present. /It’s a birthday present.
CHAIN DRILL
Use a chain drill to practice How old are you? I am__ years old. It works well with a row of students, who turn to each other in series.
Student 1: How old are you?
Student 2: I am __ years old.
Student 3: (Point to Student 2 and ask Student 4.) How old is he/she?
Student 4: He/She is __ years old.
Student 5: (Start the chain over.) How old are you?
Student 6: I’m __ years old.
After a few sequences, start the chain over in another part of the classroom.
PLAY “FIND THE CARD”
See the directions for this game in “Games” at the back of this guide. Use the large vocabulary cards for bus driver, businessman, carpenter, doctor, nurse, student, and teacher. If you want to make the game more challenging, include vocabulary cards from Units 1
