What is Citation?
Citation is the way that we tell the reader where we got our information. It is made up of two parts:
In-text citations
Works Cited page (bibliography)
Why Cite?
There are three reasons that you need to show where you got your information:
So the reader will believe you
To help anyone who wants to find out more
To give credit for the work someone has done
What to Cite?
You need to provide a citation for any information that you use that is mon knowledge.
Quotes
Paraphrases/ Summaries
Facts/Figures
Opinions of experts
In-Text Citations
When we use information in a paper we need to let the reader know where it came from right away.
In MLA style this is done using simple parenthetical ( ) notes after the information.
In-Text Citations
These citations are meant to be short, so they don’t break up the paper too much.
They are made up of the author’s family name and the page number(s) the information was taken from
If you are using more than one source by the same author, then you would add a short version of the work’s title
If the author’s name is mentioned in the sentence, you can just list the page number
Examples
A hero is defined as “one who prizes honor and glory above life itself and dies on the battlefield in the prime of life.”(Finkelberg, 1)
Over eighty percent of the time that a weapon is used in the epic it is a spear. (Van Wees, Homeric 144)
Segal noted the importance of pity and gentleness to the epic. (12)
Works Cited Page
The in-text citation is only helpful if it allows the reader to find the information themselves
The Works Cited page lets them find the information they would need about the source you used.
Different types of sources have slightly different formats

The list of Works Cited must be on a new page at the end of your text
The list must include every source used in your paper
