The research findings so far with regard -speak have demonstrated that there are many stylistically significant features with respect to phonology, graphology, lexicon and discourse, which can be summarized as follows: (1) Phonological features. Onomatopoeias are used to achieve the auditory effects of writing; abundant original homophones are created in order to save time and speed up the munication; sound repetitions are used in -speak to mimic infant language and thus the effect of being cute, intimate and humorous can be obtained. (2) Graphological features. Misspellings and deviant spellings are frequently found on ; the reduced use of capitalization is also a marked stylistic feature in -speak; punctuations are usually omitted and unconventionally used emoticons are created for pensation of the clues in munication. (3) Lexical features. A large number of neologisms occur on , which reveals the uniqueness and originality of -speak. In most cases, these words still follow the traditional word-formation rules, either in English or Chinese; Old words with new meanings added help to expand the range of chat-room vocabulary and besides, colloquial items, slangy expressions and taboos are also very much used -speak. (4) Syntactic features. Short and simple entries are preferred in ; elliptical and plete sentences are used to sustain an informal tone as well as to save keystrokes; interrogative sentences are also frequently used to keep the conversation going.
