Translator is the most dynamic element involved in the translating practice. During the translating process, he has to understand the original text profoundly, and recreate a translated text with another language. Translator has to make a full play of his subjectivity in the translating performance. However, traditional translation studies focused on original text and author, attaching great importance to parative research of original and translated texts, and trying to set up a criterion based on faithfulness for translation. Translator was treated like a translating tool and his subjective function was ignored. With the cultural turn in the translation studies and translating turn in the cultural studies, translating subjective studies got its due emphasis and became a hot subject of translation studies gradually. Based on the hermeneutic translation motion proposed by e Steiner, the thesis makes a tentative endeavor in embodying the abstract concept of translator‟s subjectivity into the four concrete steps of “trust”, “aggression”, “incorporation”, “restitution” in the research of the two translated versions of Pride and Prejudice. The research aims at stressing the subjective function played by translator during the translating process and affirming the crucial significance of translator in translation.
Steiner holds that any translation activity starts from an initiative “trust” of the translator will choose an original text only when the translator believes that the translation of a certain text will bring meaningfulness or fulfill a certain objective. “Trust” comes from the belief of the translator in the original text, and the translator‟s petence and translating strategies are also important factors of “trust”. Starting from the two aspects, the thesis points out that the two translators‟ choice of Pride and Prejudice is never blindly or accidentally but based on sound subjective reason.
