Abstract
As Wilde’s only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray has been generally recognized as the best representative work of his aestheticism. It has aroused great controversy and been labeled as “immoral” ever since it was published. The overall objective of this thesis is to reevaluate Wilde’s aestheticism and connotation of The Picture of Dorian Gray.
This thesis analyzes the main characters and plot in The Picture of Dorian Gray through close reading. Through detailed analysis, this thesis reveals that while embodies Wilde’s artistic thoughts that “life imitates art”; “art has nothing to do with morality”, the characters in his works are found to be impossible to be personalities totally isolated from sense of morality. Dorian is described as the practitioner of Wilde’s aestheticism, but Wilde shows condemnation on his immoral behaviors and punishes him to death; Basil Hallward worships beauty and art, but he also plays the role of moralistic guide to others. His tolerance and humanity is the indication of Wilde’s moral tendency. Lord Henry is the preacher of Wilde’s aestheticism, while his attitude towards life is detachment. Wilde also presents his aesthetic views and strong moral sense by showing his sympathy for the weak, condemnation of crime and the warning role of morality demonstrated from the changes of the picture. Additionally, this thesis confirms the rationality of Wilde’s double manifestations of both aestheticism and morality by analyzing reasons through argumentation method.
