Luhmann’s Systems Theory and Its Applications in
Literary Studies: A Bibliography1

INTRODUCTORY REMARKS
This bibliography is a fully revised and signifi cantly extended version
of my 22-page monograph Luhmann in Literary Studies. A Bibliography
(Siegen: LUMIS 1995). It differs from its predecessor mainly in two
respects. Firstly, I have now included several sections dealing with second-
ary literature on Luhmann’s systems theory (glossaries, introductions,
critical studies, and special issues of journals) and a section on Luhmann
in English translation. Secondly, all other sections have been updated.
Throughout, English translations are mentioned when available. Since
the focus is not on systems theory in general but on Luhmann’s version of
it, publications dealing with the systems theories of Talcott Parsons, Peter
M. Hejl, Itamar Even-Zohar and others have generally not been taken into
account. Interviews are listed under the name of the interviewee and indi-
cated by square brackets. In accordance with English usage, names such
as de Lannoy and von Bormann are entered under ‘d’ and ‘v’ respectively.
