Chapter 8 The Confucian Temple
The Confucian Temple is now the center of Qinhuai scenery belt with the Qinhuai River winding through. Other spots are the Zhanyuan Park, Confucian ancient buildings, the Aigrette Island, the Fort at Zhonghua Gate, boats on the river and many views along the banks. The tour is really attractive with so many historical relics, parks, and local features.
The Qinhuai River
QinHuai River regarded as the mother river of Nanjing, is a branch of ChangJiang, extending 110km. It is crucial for this city, as the Thames for London.
The river divides into two streams, one of which runs pass the city is called the inner QinHuai. The inner is known as "10 li Qinhuai", where used to be the most flourishing place in the nation, fostering many poets, and scholars in the ancient time. Painted boats shuttled to and fro and music sounded all night.
The Confucius Temple
Nanjing Confucius Temple, Fuzimiao in Chinese, is the holy shrine of Confucius, the outstanding ancient Chinese philosopher and thinker.
The temple was first built in 1034 in the Song dynasty(960-1729), expanded on the basis of the Imperial Academy of the East Jin dynasty (317 - 420). plex consists of Confucius Temple, the Imperial Academy and Gongyuan where provincial and national examinations were held.
Confucius
Confucius is one of the most famous thinker, educator and philosopher in the Chinese as well as the whole world history. His doctrine has a very important influence throughout China and the world.
1、the Screen Wall
Confucius Temple has the largest screen wall in China, which is ten-meter-high and 110-meter-long.
The screen wall, facing the Dacheng Gate acts as a shield.
The Pan Pond
To the north of the screen wall there is a pond named Pan Pond, a pond in the shape of a half moon.
