Defining amplification
Three types of amplification
Semantic amplification
Amplification by supplying verbs, nouns, adj, adv, numerals, plural forms of nouns, unit words, category words, etc.
Amplification by supplying words in the TL text that can indicate the verb tenses in SLT
Amplification by supplying background information
Structural amplification
Amplification by supplying words omitted in the source language text
Amplification by supplying what is implied structurally in the SL text
Rhetorical amplification
I. Introduction
Omission is used for the purpose of making the TLT briefer, conciser and more impressive;
While
Amplification is used for making the translated version more accurate, more idiomatic, more expressive and clearer. What is added in TL is what is implied in SL.
Defining amplification
Amplification, also called addition, means supplying necessary words in our translation on the basis of an prehension of SLT and the rules of naturalness (idiomaticity) and professionism of TL, and the words supplied in TL are indispensable in the meaning of SLT.
Remember: It is for the purposes of “faithful representation” of the thought of the author and “naturalness/ idiomaticity and professionism of TL” that we often resort to “amplification”.
