美国南北战争之后迎来了美国高等教育的转型,在每个特定转型时期,
美国大学的发展都是在一定思想的指引下进行的。安德鲁·D·怀特所创办的
康乃尔大学在这时顺势而生,康乃尔大学是一所赠地学院,而且后来所创办
的赠地学院树立了榜样。安德鲁·D·怀特以全新的理念创办康乃尔大学,在
这一时期具有代表性。加上他毕生致力于创办新型大学,借鉴当时欧洲大学
模式,结合本国国情,对美国当时的高等教育发展起了积极推动作用。
怀特的高等教育思想内涵丰富,本文主要通过他创办康乃尔大学这一实
践,来系统的分析探讨其在办学实践中所体现出的教育思想。本研究有五个
部分构成:第一部分:绪论。该部分主要介绍选题的意义、目的,以及国内
外的文献资料与所采纳的研究方法。第二部分:介绍安德鲁・迪克森・怀特的
生平与时代背景。这部分介绍了怀特的生平,即是他从求学一直到晚年的生
命历程,以及当时美国高等教育发展的现状。前两部分为本研究的基础部分。
第三部分:安德鲁・迪克森・怀特提出的“康乃尔计划”与高等教育改革。第
四部分:安德鲁・迪克森・怀特高等教育思想特征。其教育思想特征包括五大
治校原则、大学自治、人文教育与实用教育的紧密结合三个方面。这两部分
为本研究的重点部分。第五部分:安德鲁・迪克森・怀特的高等教育思想的历
史意义与对我国高等学校教育的启示。
从理论到实践,再到大学的创建与发展,康乃尔大学几乎从它一诞生期,
就以创新精神影响整个美国高等教育。怀特的教育思想给予我们诸多启示。
今天,我们的大学将如何更好地来适应社会的发展,如何与国际一流大学接
轨,如何引领时代的发展,已成为我们现如今面临的重大问题,通过分析怀
特教育思想从而获得对我国明确办学思想、加强高校教师队伍建设,高校要
与时俱进,积极应对社会经济发展的需求。

Andrew D· White’s Ideas on Higher Education
Abstract
Andrew Dickson White, the first president of Cornell University, established the college
at the initial stage. As one of the famous presidents and educators in the 20th century, White
had a particular view on “university”. By setting up Cornell University, he put his
educational, collegiate ideas into practice. After the Civil War, American Higher Education
underwent a transformation. White did a lot attempts and reforms seeking a new pattern for
Higher Education. His thoughts and practice had a great influence on the history of
development of American Higher Education. The article mainly analyses White’s advanced
educational ideas which were represented through his practice.
The whole essay is divided into five parts. The first part severs as an Introduction,
which mainly introduces the background, purpose, significance of the subject, and the
research studies that are accepted home and abroad. The second part is about the life and age
of Andrew Dickson White, which introduces the experience of White’s from cradle to grave
and the condition of American higher educational of the time. T
