While the maintenance worker was working on the pipe, a bad smell of rotten eggs appeared. The foreman who was outside of the pit noticed that the worker was feeling bad and asked him to go out of the pit. He tried to do it but when he reached the ladder, he fainted. The foreman called for help and with another worker went down in the pit. They immediately fainted.

When the fire-fighters rescue team arrived in the plant, the first worker was dead and the two other workers died at the hospital.

In 2001/02/15 in France, in a plant producing food additives by extraction from natural products, two workers had to make some maintenance on a pump in a pit.

After extraction of the additive, the wastes, mainly made of wet algae rubble and salts, were stored directly on the ground and then incorporated in fertilizers in another part of the plant.

Even if the wastes were not toxic, the French Environmental Agency asked to collect the water and to send it to the waste water treatment station.
