About the author:
Guy de Maupassant, the well-known French short story writer and novelist. When he was young, he had a great interest in literature.

He practised writing literary works under the guidance(指导,教导) of the famous novelist Flaubert(福楼拜). And Balzac was another teacher of his. So he wrote in the tradition of 19th century French realism( 现实主义),and became one of the most famous French critical realists(批判现实主义作家)of the 19th century.

Maupassant suffered a great deal from illness in his life. Yet he struggled to continue writing with tremendous(极大的,巨大的,不平常的)will power. He had but a short life, and died at the age of 43 ( on July 6, 1893 ).
