Abstract The trend of M&amp;A activity in Hong Kong will be characterized by three major aspects : (1) panies already in a globalization trend will continue to be on the lookout for suitable overseas investment opportunities. Cross-border deals should increase. (2) Locally listed H-shares and red chips would continue to make use of their listing vehicles in Hong Kong for M&amp;A activity on the Mainland. (3) The HKSAR Government would be an emerging player in the local M&amp;A market as it sees the needs to privatize certain of its operations. The M&amp;A cases related to the acquisition of Cable &amp; Wireless HKT by Pacific Century CyberWorks, the asset injection into China Merchants Holdings from its parent and the flotation of the MTR Corporation should give some useful hindsight in handling M&amp;A. In our conclusion, we are optimistic about the future developments of Hong Kong’s stock market, on the conditions that it is able to enhance its current status as a preferred listing place for Chinese enterprises amid increasing challenges from the opening China markets ahead.
