Ⅰ. Introduction
Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested; that is, some books are to be read only in parts; others to be read, but not curiously; and some few to be read wholly, and with diligence and attention. (Develop Reading Skills .2000:89)
prehension is an important part in English learning. Four basic skills in any language are listening, reading, speaking and writing. Reading and listening belong to the process prehension, while speaking and writing fall into production. It is well known that production is based prehension. Some people think that the study of English is just reciting and mastering grammar, but they ignore some important aspects, just like reading. If they cannot read an English text quickly or get the main idea of it, they cannot say that they have mastered English. prehension is a basic part in English learning. During learning English, the students need prehend some texts. Reading can help them prehend these texts very well. At the same time, the students need to read some materials. So reading is necessary. From the above reasons, the students can see that prehension plays an important role in English leaning.
II. The Importance of Reading
The Definition of Reading
According to Oxford Advanced Learner’s English-Chinese Dictionary pressed by Oxford University Press Inc., there are seven definitions of “reading” in all.
1. “Reading” means the activity of sb who reads.
2. Books, articles, etc. those are intended to be read.
