Origin
Western drama grow out of early religious ceremonial. It has three origins :
Greek tragedy

Medieval drama
Drama is grouped into two major categories:

By tragedy, we generally mean a play that portrays a conflict between human beings and some superior, overwhelming force.
The fourth century, BC, the philosopher Aristotle, pointed out that a tragedy dramatically “ imitated” an “ action of high importance.”
Aristotle further explained that tragedy should have a catharsis or purging effect. When we are faced with the protagonist’s misfortune, we are likely to passionate. At the same time, we may experience fear, because the protagonist’s failure is a frightening reminder of our own vulnerabilities.

Most classic Greek tragedies(and those of Shakespear) deal with serious, universal themes such as :
The protagonist of most classical tragedies is a tragic hero. This hero
is noble and in many ways admirable
pride
rebelliousness
jealousy
has a tragic flaw, a personal failing that leads to a tragic end
