Significance
River sediments in China are poorly studied and documented.
Results of studies are useful in understanding the baselines for contamination assessment and in giving insight into the fate of micro-pollutants in sediments.
OBJECTIVES
to provide basic values of element contents, geo-chemical substrates, surface properties, and trace metal association in the sediments;
to study the regional variations of sediment characteristics and trace metal distributions;
to analyze the relations between geo-chemical and surface properties of the sediments, and the relations between sediment characteristics and trace metal concentrations.

The representativeness of samples
The coefficients of variation for the contents of most elements in the same river sediments from the Yangtze and Yellow were only less than (Li Yuanhui et al. and Qu et al.)
The coefficients of variation for the contents of most elements in the Rhine in a 5 year monitoring were less than (Martin et al. )
The coefficients of variation for trace metals in river particles are little higher, but not exceeding one order of magnitude (Chen et al.).
