No word can possibly reveal my gratitude to my supervisor, Prof. Zhu Yue, for
his overall influence on me. It is Prof. Zhu who shepherds me to linguistic road and
cultivates me an irresistible longing to explore the secrets of linguistics. In addition,
there is no affectedness, stiffness, but obvious ease, sincerity, fatherliness and
optimism in his manner, which constantly remind me of how much personal charisma
exercises influence on others.
Special thanks also go to faculty at School of Foreign Studies, Anhui University.
They are Prof. Hua Quankun, Prof. Chen Zhengfa, Prof. Zhang Ming, Prof. Zhou
Fangzhu, Prof. Zhu Xiaomei, Prof. Chen Bing, Dr. Hu Jian, Dr. Yangling and Dr.
Zhang Hongxia, whose insightful lectures and valuable help leave some lasting
imprints on my study.
I am particularly grateful to my vocational school teacher, Ms. Tao, for her faith
and trust in me, which granted me an opportunity to realize the dream of being a
postgraduate through thick and thin. Meanwhile, I am exceedingly indebted to her
daughter, Jiang Jiang, for her invaluable suggestions about the questionnaire and her
distributing them to the American subjects.
Both Chinese and American subjects have my sincere gratitude for their
cooperation in my empirical study without which the whole thesis would have been
groundless.
Thanks to the insights, moral support and joys I obtained from my classmates, I
was able to e all the difficulties in my thesis writing.
Last but not least, this thesis is dedicated to my beloved parents whose boundless
love and influence have shaped
