Traditional translation studies pay close attention to the original text and center on the nature and quality of translations,which ignore influences of literary and cultural norms in the target language on literary
the cultural turn in contemporary translation studies,
the focus of translation studies gradually changes from the pure linguistic level to probing into factors governing literary translations at social, cultural and linguistic one of representatives of descriptive
school,Gideon Toury puts forward translation norms theory,which
regards literary translation as plicated dynamic system within a
norms theory situates translation activities in social and cultural background and utilizes the descriptive paradigm to generalize translation norms influencing translators’choices and decisions in literary translating activities,which broadens the field of
literary translation studies.
This thesis attempts to describe the influences of translation norms on literary translation based on Gideon Toury’S translation norms theory. Three Chinese versions of Oliver Twist in 20m century,namely,the
pre-May 4m period(from 1 900 to 1 9 1 6),the enlightenment period(from
1 9 1 7 to 1 949)and the Republic period(from 1 949 to 1 986),are selected
as the analytical preliminary norms influencing choice of Oliver Twist as the source text are elaborated from social ideologies, readers’expectancy,translation policies of publishers and translators’ ,analysis of the operational norms governing the
selection and distribution of lingual materials are unfolded from social developments,evolvement from classical to vernacular Chinese and constant development of the punctuation ,norms affecting the rendering of style are expounded by analyzing the dominating
translation thoughts and status of translations and translators.
