ABSTRACT: Experience gained while teaching freshmen students demonstrates the need for carefully planning the first day of class. For an instructor that is implementing a “problem based learning” approach, the first day of class is still more important. The author has been attending UICEE conference since 1998 and has been implementing some of the contributions made by several authors during these events. Experience gained in an introductory course in mechanical engineering that was recently integrated in the undergraduate program of the university where the author is affiliated was reported in the first UICEE Global Conference in Cracow. Here a new approach to class-work was described taking into consideration current economical and social changes. The class environment was designed to resemble as much as possible to the actual working conditions in indu
