I feel I cannot let the opportunity slip without expressing my gratitude to my
supervisor, Professor Chen Bing, under whose guidance I have accumulated necessary
knowledge for this paper; his wide-ranging knowledge, kind encouragement and
insightful guidance have led to many improvements through the whole writing
process of my thesis.
My sincere gratitude also goes to Professor Chen Zhengfa, Professor Hua
Quankun, Professor Hong Zengliu, Associate Professor Qi Tao, Professor Zhou
FangZhu and other professors of the School of Foreign Studies for their illuminating
lectures and earnest instruction. Without their respectable tutoring, this thesis would

Abstract
Katherine Mansfield (1888—1923), a famous short story writer, is born in New
Zealand. But her literary achievements rank her as one of the most distinguished
British writers, due to her long-term habitation and literary career in England.
Away from her motherland, Mansfield‘s fixed New Zealand nationality and her
childhood experiences, which are considered to be the main source of her New
Zealand theme, exert a deep influence on her writings. The prose-like description of
slice of life and the vivid inner monologue, which e h
