Abstract: Southern belles are most striking characters in William Faulkner’s works Absalom, Absalom! and A Rose for Emily, but there is relatively fewer scholarly study of the predicament of these southern belles. In order pensate for the limitation, the present paper attempts to recount the predicament of these southern belles and to explore the reasons resulting in their respective predicament. To begin with, the paper gives a brief account of the southern belles’ tragedy. The four southern belles are represented with the same characteristics in different stages respectively. Then the thesis tries to relate their predicament to the Old South and gives an analysis from the historical and religious points of view. As it goes on, the paper concludes that most of these southern belles are unable to accept the changing present life and that in this way we can find our problems as well.

[摘要]:《押沙龙,押沙龙!》和《献给爱米丽的一朵玫瑰花》中最引人注意的人物。但相对而言,很少有针对她们境遇的学术性研究。为了弥补这一缺陷,本文试论述了这些南方妇女们的境遇,并探索了导致她们各自境遇的原因。文章开始笔者简要描述了南方妇女们的悲剧。她们各自处于不同的时期但却有相同的特性。本文通过地域文化、历史、宗教背景探索她们的人生境遇,即:如何面对无法逆转的生活变迁。这也是现代人的困惑。

I. Introduction
William Faulkner, a predominant figure in modern American literature, enjoys a worldwide fame owing to his stylistic innovations and different social conflicts reflected in his works. His novels rank among the most important books of the 20th century. For them William Faulkner was awarded the 1949 Nobel Prize in literature. Faulkner was particularly at home with stream of consciousness and Gothic style to create plex and profound world in his fiction. He used Yoknapatawpha County in the South as the
