Abstract
Over the past decade, munication has moved from the public switched
work to the . Voice over IP (VoIP), a service that transfers voice signal
packets over IP-works has been in a focus of much attention in recent years, as a
newly emerged technology. Asterisk, an open source software, makes it simple to implement
various telephony applications and services, such as VoIP, as a converged telephony platform.
SIP, the session initiation protocol, is the IETF protocol for VoIP and other text and
multimedia sessions, like instant messaging, video, on-line games and other services.
The author consulted the relevant documentation of VoIP, Asterisk and SIP. The
operating system for Asterisk is Linux, which is installed and configured by the author. The
installation and configuration of Asterisk is done to implement basic call, voice mail and
audio conference on a work with soft phones. Based on the implementation, the
author explored how SIP works in detail with Wireshark by analyzing SIP message exchanges
under the different circumstances, such as registering, call establishment, end of a call, de-
registering and call establishment to mail box.
The analysis results indicate that Asterisk is a development platform which can solve all
kinds of problems and SIP plays a major role in the enablement of VoIP.
