The Basics of Eviews

What is Eviews ?
• Eviews is an econometrics software that:
!Allows data and regression analysis, as well
as producing projections in a Windows
environment;
!Uses visual features of Windows;
• The first version, Eviews , was launched
in 1994;
• The most recent version, Eviews 4, was
launched in 2001.
• The version currently being used is Eviews
.
Installation
• Insertion of essive Eviews floppy
disks
" Insert the first disk : double click on
Setup
" Then follow instructions
Opening Eviews
• Open Eviews:
" Go to Start/Programs/Eviews 3
" Double click on Eviews
Basic Terminology
• Title Bar called Eviews : blue bar located
at the top of main window;
• Main Menu : above the title bar ; shows :
File Edit Objects … Help ;
• Command window: is the white portion
in which to fill in mands

• Work Area : is the dark portion located in
the middle of the window and in which
Eviews displays objects that it creates.
• Status Line : at the bottom of the window;
displays Eviews messages, the
directory by default, the database and
the work file used by Eviews ;

• Workfiles are object containers
• Create a new workfile :
– select File/new/workfile from the main
menu,
– set frequency and range in dialogue
box (undated - 1 to 5), then click OK,
– a untitled workfile is created.

• Objects are basic working elements where
information is stored
• Creating series and groups as objects
– To create series and groups use Quick/Empty
group on the menu bar.
• Fill in data
– Type in {1,2,3,4,5} in the first column and
{1,1,2,2,4} in the second.
