Communicating our work
Women in Academic Medicine anized in 1982 for women physicians affiliated with Harvard Medical School to meet and discuss issues of mutual interest. Over the years work has evolved to include all women scientists affiliated with Harvard Medical School. Meetings are held throughout the academic year to hear speakers discuss academic career development issues. A major goal of work has been to identify the existing impediments to women's academic advancement and to assist in ing such barriers.
In seeking to understand what leads to moving up the academic career ladder, ponents have been identified as critical to ess. One ponent munication. Scientists must be able to convey their work to the rest of the munity, both locally and nationally. It is essential municate one's work on a daily basis — at department meetings, grand rounds, journal club, and on a one-to-one basis with peers and chiefs. munication produces the recognition needed for personal advancement in one's department and for peer support and approval in one's chosen field of science.
For this series, communications vehicles were identified and each formed the basis for its own program. Scientists, editors, and educators were invited to share their expertise. This theme prompted a great deal of interest, and the meetings were opened to the entire Harvard Medical munity.
We did not want the insights and advice given in these programs to be lost MUNICATING OUR WORK evolved out of this series. Since these were informal meetings between colleagues, it was decided, in preparing this book, to duplicate that informal style rather than to present this information in
