Introduction & Acknowledgements

The demand for classes in English at the Centre for Applied Linguistics and Special Languages (FSZ) has
increased almost exponentially in the past years. The ratio for places available and places applied for on
our Legal English courses in the last semester was approximately 1:3.

One reason for this shift in demand is in all likelihood the legal education reform in Germany. Under the
new regime students are required to plete a legal ESP/EAP course or attend a law lecture
taught in a foreign language. The aim of this was to improve the quality of graduate output by requiring
students to embrace international aspects as part of their undergraduate studies. The effect is that the
courses on offer at the FSZ are enormously oversubscribed.

The little reader you are holding represents the first attempt to provide our students with prehensive
package of materials for learning English for Law. As with any first attempt, we are by no means certain
that it is perfect – though we hope that we got as close to it as humanly possible. Further editions will
follow in due course as the material will be updated and student and tutor feedback will be taken into
account.

W e have taken our material from a number of sources, each of which is properly acknowledged in the
corresponding footnotes. Our gratitude for the production of this little reader goes to the primary authors
of the material and the German legislators for modating reproduction of copyrighted material for
the purposes of teaching.

Finally it is necessary to highlight the extraordinary work done by Eric Lai in the production of this reader
