Preface to the Third Edition
God may have created the universe in six days, but this slender volume
evolved over two decades. I began studying the legal issues under-
lying the evolution teaching controversy in a 1978 seminar taught by
Harvard law professor Larry Tribe and, during the early 1980s, I broad-
ened my research into the controversy under the tutelage of Univer-
sity of Wisconsin historian of science Ron Numbers. The first edition
of this book appeared in 1985, followed by an updated version in 1989,
