Ralph Mathisen devoted 21 pages in Volume 9 (2002-2003)of this journal to discussing
my book, TheMaking of a ChristianAristocracy: Social and ReligiousChange in the Western
RomanEmpire (Cambridge, MA: HarvardUniversity Press, 2002).1I have been prompted
to write this response not only to correctMathisen's (hereafter cited as M.) erroneousand
misleading statementsabout my book, but also because I believe my response will be of
use to other scholars insofar as I will address some of the key problems facing ancient
historianswho try,as I have, to address large-scalesocial and historicalquestions, and do
so by incorporatingquantitative evidence.
