【Abstract】As great writers enjoying international reputation, Jonathan Swift(1667-1745) and
e Orwell(1903-1950) are under scrutiny from their times till now. Their masterpieces,
Gulliver’s Travels(1726) and Animal Farm(1945), have greatly aroused the interest of numerous
critics and readers. However, people tend to interpret them from political perspectives. What’s
more, there are parative studies on these two books, which resemble each other in many
ways, especially in the employment of irony. So it makes sense for me to delve into the ironies of
these two books from parative perspective.
This dissertation examines the ironies of Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels and e
Orwell’s Animal Farm, trying to point out their similarities and differences through careful
reading.
There are four chapters in this dissertation. Chapter 1 is the introduction of these two writers
and their works. There is also a literature review. I’ll focus on the studies that have been done and
introduce my new ideas. Chapter 2 concentrates on the definition of irony, giving a brief
introduction of the three types of irony, which are verbal irony, situational irony and dramatic
irony. Then I’ll point out the similarities of the ironic skills exploited by Swift and Orwell. In the
following chapter I will also point out their differences. At last a conclusion is drawn in Chapter 4.
