My sincere gratitude goes to my supervisor, Ms. Guo Linghui, Lecturer in the Department of
English, Formal College, Shenzhen University. Not only did she introduce me to plex
nature of language testing, parison between CET-4 and TEM-4, but she also gave valuable
guidance, correction and encouragement during the process of research and writing this essay.
This study has drawn extensively on the works of others who have been recognized both in
the text and the bibliography. I wish to particularly acknowledge each of these authors for their
insights and expertise which have contributed greatly to my own understanding of testing,
especially CET and TEM and the relationship between testing and teaching.

【Abstract】A large number of examinations in the past have encouraged a tendency to
separate testing from teaching. However, more and more people emphasize the relationship
between them, now they are so closely interrelated that it is virtually impossible to work in either
field without being constantly concerned with the other. This paper considers parison
between the College English Test Band 4 (CET-4) and the Test for English Major Grade 4
(TEM-4), trying to sort out the similarities and differences between the two tests, the advantages
and disadvantages to English teaching and how tests have improved English teaching. Finally, this
paper puts forward that CET and TEM should be conflated as one proficiency test based on the
discussion.

【中文摘要】在过去许多语言测试是与语言教学是分离的,现在越来越多的人们开始注
意这两者之间的关系,意识到语言测试与语言教学的关系非常密切,忽视任何一方,另一方
都无法正常运用进行。本文通过对大学英语四级考试和英语专业四级考试进行比较,了解这
两种语言测试的的异同,分析它们对语言教学的积极意义和消极意义,探讨英语测试促进英
语教学的途径。文章最后大胆提出取消专业与非专业之分,将大学英语考试与英语专业考试
融为一种水平考试。
