efforts, he portrayed two crucial figures in order to save the lives of some personages

[ 摘要] 《双城记》是狄更斯作品中仅有的两部历史小说之一,其背景为历史上
有名的法国大革命。众所周知,狄更斯是一个批判现实主义的作家,不过需要注意的是
他对不良事物的抨击是以人道主义为出发点的。在《双城记》里他实际上持一种中庸的
态度。当贵族鱼肉百姓时他理所当然要为之鸣不平,而当一部分革命群众虐杀无辜时他
同样也要反对。在他的眼里,无论平民还是贵族都应该遵守一定的道德规范。书中梅尼
特大夫一家正是温文有礼讲道德的人。在情节展开上作者为他所中意的一家人的命运安
排了两个关键人物,一个是得伐石太太,另一个是西德尼·卡尔登。前者被强烈的复仇
心驱使着***成性,威胁到梅尼特大夫一家人的幸福甚至生命;后者则出于对大夫女儿
的爱,甘愿代她丈夫走上断头台,从而挽救了这个几乎要被毁灭的家庭。
在正文部分,首先,对于得伐石太太,本文从三个角度进行分析:即她的阶级状况,
她与埃弗瑞蒙德家族的世仇及她在革命中的疯狂行动。
第二,对卡尔登,文章也从三个角度来分析即:他的性格特征,他对露茜的爱以及
他伟大的创举。
结论部分在深化主题的同时,从文章结构,作品风格,人物艺术魅力及作者意图等
几个方面进一步进行了分析。

—— Of Vengeance and of Love
[Introduction]
Strictly speaking, A Tale of Two Cities is not the most praiseworthy work of Dickens'. For
years, in China, this novel had been regarded as Dickens' representative work and been given high
praise to, which was partly because that it was a novel describing the French Revolution.
However this novel is not an epic of the French Revolution, and is neit
