Breaking a Social Norm Project —Jump a Queue
When we always do something the same way, this way will e a rule. If many people always obey this rule to do something, this rule will e a social norm. If someone is not obeying this social norm, they are viewed as breaking this social norm. They probably will be punished by people. I jumped a queue in the Walmart to break a social norm that directly harmed the interests of others and the rules of public order. I used sub-culture, labels, and other theories to analyze people’s behaviors when I jumped the queue.
I. First time-jumped the queue in Walmart
The first time I went to Walmart to jump the queue was on September 28,2013. It was Saturday. I bought one AMP energy drink , and I went to line 25 to pay money. In this line, seven people were in front of me, including a woman who was paying and looked to be in her 50s. Another six people looked like two families. One family included one mother who looked to be in her early 40s, dressed in a red T-shirt and blue jeans, with brown hair and glasses. She had four children that were two girls and two boys. They had brown hair. One girl looked to be seven years old and anther looked to be ten years old. One boy looked to be four years old, anther boy looked to be five years old.
